Library Services at MU-Mbeya Campus College

 

Introduction

Library to an Institution has the role of supporting teaching and learning process through provision of both print and electronic resources.  Thus access, acquisition, production, use and dissemination of data, information, knowledge, understanding and wisdom are key role functions of Library to its library users.

 

Mission Statement of the Library

The Sub-mission of the Mzumbe University (MU) Mbeya Campus College Library which contributes towards the main MU mission is to support teaching, learning, research, consultancy, publication, public services and technical services of the University through provision of books, journals, audio visual equipment and bindery services. The library is therefore, a backbone of the University College in terms of facilitating teaching through storage of information resources and provision of study places.

 

The Library Resources

The collection currently comprises about 4,541 Textbooks, Reference books, Journals (periodicals), dissertations and research reports that cater for all the courses conducted at the Mzumbe University Mbeya Campus College. The book collection can be viewed online through this web address: http://library.mzumbe.ac.tz. The book stock is classified and arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System, 22nd edition, and catalogued according to the Anglo American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) 2nd ed. Revised, in 2002

 

Library users

Our Library can accommodate about 500 readers at a time and has 12 study carrels for students’ carrying intensive study. Thus the available number of students who are more than 2000 of Law, Human Resource Management, Accounts and Finance and Business studies are accommodated in our Library.

 

Sections/Units of the MU-MCC Library

Mzumbe University Mbeya Campus College Library follows and enhances the same structure as the Directorate of Library and Technical Services of Mzumbe University since we provide the same services to our customers as at Main Campus Library. Instead of Directorate, Our Library is a department/section and consists of Units providing almost all services being offered at MU Main Campus Library.

Therefore the Section has three Units as follows:

(ii) Library & Technical Services Unit

Location in New Library: Ground Floor

This unit is responsible for book selection, acquisitions, processing (Cataloguing and classification of New Library Resources) and automation of all new library materials. In addition, the unit conducts annual evaluation of book stock and provision of bindery services.

It is in this floor where General Collection and reading place for 200 students is situated.

This floor contains an office for Head of Library and Technical services Unit together with Pool office for Library staff who process Library resources.

 

(i) Reader Services Unit

Location in New Library: First Floor

The unit coordinates all reader services within the library, organizes the library stock and coordinates the book circulation. The Head of this Unit acts as a link between the section and book borrowers. In this floor there is a place for reading to accommodate 300 students. This floor contain an office of the Head of Library who is responsible for overseeing all the activities taking place in the building concerning Library activities and report to the Campus College Principal. Apart from that the floor contains the Special reserve collection and an office for Reader services Unit that monitor and supervise book circulation.

 

(iii) Library Science, Information Management and ICT Unit

Location in New Library: Second Floor

This Unit is responsible for the provision of reference services to readers, selection, acquisitions and processing of periodicals/ journals, students and staff research reports and theses, reference books, and organizing information in the shelves.  Also deals with provision of information search training to library users both manually and electronically. Furthermore this unit provides audio visual aids which support the teaching functions. These teaching aids are LCDs and Projection Screens, Photographic services and Public address systems. This floor has the capacity to accommodating 100 students at a time. It is in this floor where  there is Library Computer room (Managed by Librarians for training users on how access and use our Online Catalogue and search electronic resources for supplementing print resources).  Also in this floor there is a store for Archive Material/resources.

 

Access and Use of Print Library Resources

Library users access Print Library Resources through Manual Catalogue or Online/Automated Catalogue. Manual Catalogue Library user will search on the Catalogue using Author or Title or Subject arranged alphabetically or classification number. For the case of online catalogue the Library user will search bibliographic information/entries in the computer system using ABCD Database.

 

Access and Use of Electronic Resources (Non Print Library Resources)

Library user will search the subscribed databases from the link: http://www.inasp.info/en/network/country/TZ/resources.

 

Opening and Closing hours

Monday to Friday: From 08:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Saturday to Sunday: From 10:00 am to 09:30 pm

Public holidays: Closed
